Why You Gesture When Nobody Can See You

People gesture on phone calls and voice notes because gestures can serve the speaker, not only the listener. But the benefit depends on the task.

You may gesture during a phone call, podcast, or private voice note because gestures can help the person speaking, not only the person watching. Hands can represent size, direction, sequence, or contrast while a sentence is still taking shape. The listener does not need to see the movement for it to accompany your thinking.

That does not mean every hand movement makes thought easier. Studies have found benefits in some explanation tasks and no benefit in others. The useful distinction is between a gesture that carries part of the idea and movement added merely because someone said gesturing is good for you.

Blind speakers revealed that gesture is not only visual

If gesture existed only to show a listener something, it should disappear when nobody can see it. A striking test of that assumption came from people who had never seen conversational gestures.

In a 1998 report in Nature, congenitally blind speakers gestured even when speaking to a blind listener. The study included sighted and blind speakers completing tasks with sighted or blind experimenters. Its result does not prove a single reason humans gesture, but it rules out two simple requirements: a visual model to copy and an observing partner to benefit from the movement.

That is why your hands may still move during an audio-only conversation. The movement can belong to the act of formulating speech itself.

Meaningful gestures can carry part of an explanation

One experiment asked speakers to remember letters while explaining solutions to math problems. They produced gestures related to the explanation, meaningless movements, or no movement. The speakers recalled more letters while making meaning-related gestures than in the other conditions.

The comparison matters. Simply moving did not produce the same result. The gestures coordinated with what the speaker was saying, such as locating or grouping parts of the problem. The authors interpreted the secondary-task performance as evidence that meaningful gesture reduced demands on working memory during that particular explanation task.

This fits the everyday experience of sketching a route in the air or using two hands to hold competing options apart. The gesture gives a spatial form to a relationship that the sentence must otherwise carry alone.

The benefit changes with the task

A later study used verbal analogies instead of math explanations. Participants remembered a secondary set of digits better when they were prohibited from gesturing than when they were told to gesture. The authors concluded that gesture did not lighten working-memory load for verbal analogies.

That result is not a contradiction to hide. It tells us the mechanism is conditional. A gesture that maps naturally onto the structure of a math problem may be useful. Forcing a gesture while solving an unfamiliar verbal relation may create another thing to manage.

Research on thinking out loud often has the same boundary: the task changes whether verbalization helps or hurts. A method that assists one form of reasoning should not be sold as a general cognitive upgrade.

What your hands may reveal during a voice note

Letting natural gestures happen can make a private recording more informative in the moment, even though the gestures are not captured. Notice when your hands:

  • hold two imagined choices in different places
  • trace the order of events
  • expand when an idea is broader than your first wording
  • stop when you cannot make the parts fit

The useful signal is not how much you move. It is where movement changes alongside the thought. That often coincides with the kind of mid-sentence discovery described in why you need to hear yourself say it.

If the precise reasoning matters later, say the gesture’s meaning aloud: “This option is on one side because it costs less, and the other is on the other side because it buys time.” The recording cannot preserve a silent sweep of your hand unless you translate it into words.

Do not turn a natural behavior into a performance

There is no reason to wave your hands on command through every journal entry. Forced movement can distract, and a voice note is not improved by looking expressive in an empty room.

Instead, remove the inhibition. Walk if walking helps. Gesture if the idea seems to need space. Pause if the movement exposes a missing step. The surprising part is not that gesture always improves thought. It is that a behavior we assume exists for an audience can still be doing work for the speaker.
